As a new year begins, ISTC partners with industry to recommit to strengthening safety culture, protecting workers, and helping to prevent serious injuries and fatalities. Safety training remains a critical foundation for ensuring every worker goes home safely at the end of each day.
This year, we resolve to:
Commit to continuous safety training.
- We recognize that effective safety training is essential to building knowledge, reinforcing safe behaviors, and reducing risk across all job sites.
Align around life-saving rules.
- We commit to consistently applying life-saving safety principles that address high-risk activities and set clear, shared expectations across industry.
Empower Stop Work Authority.
- We resolve to ensure every worker understands they have the authority, and responsibility, to stop work when conditions are unsafe, without fear of retaliation.
Look out for one another.
- Safety is a shared responsibility. We commit to taking care of our coworkers, intervening when we see at-risk behaviors, and supporting one another in making safe decisions.
See something. Say something.
- We resolve to speak up about hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions, knowing that early reporting prevents incidents and strengthens safety culture.
Strengthen awareness in high-risk activities.
- We commit to focused training and vigilance in areas such as energy isolation, working around mobile equipment, working at heights, mechanical lifting, excavation, confined space entry, hot work, line of fire, driving, work authorization, breaking containment, and preventing the bypassing of safety controls.
Develop safety leadership at all levels.
- We resolve to equip supervisors and frontline leaders with the skills to communicate expectations, model safe behavior, and hold teams accountable.
Respect that competency is earned.
- We recognize that true competency is built through a combination of training, experience, and ongoing evaluation, not by course completion alone.
